A. 1986 WAS THE FUTURE

The synth-led chords from the outset of this tune
frame it as a future classic of dubstep. Not holding
back when the bassline drops, Mensah has crafted
a sound that delivers a punch. A truly gripping
production that keeps you locked, seeming to
introduce new sounds and phrases whilst
maintaining its esoteric feel. ‘1986 Was The Future’
is going to be one of those tunes that’ll have the
dancefloor screaming for rewind after rewind – and
we’re sorry, but you’re going to be obliged to give it
to them! Currently being rinsed by the likes of
Plastician, Starkey and L-Vis.

AA1. ACID DUB

On a slightly different tip, Mensah hits us with
something a little more accustomed to the HENCH
imprint’s sound. Commencing with that familiar
steppy vocal, the background interference builds
into a seemingly mechanical drop – lifting and
taking all with it. A truly funky production that
guarantees to turn the party to a full-on warzone
when that bassline drops – no wonder the likes of
Skream, Bok Bok and Baobinga have been smashing
this one.

AA1. UNTITLED FUTURE FUNK

Guiding us in with tripped-out synths and a gentle
kick-drum, this one drops subtly. ‘Untitled Future
Funk’ is a wonderfully unique production that sits
perfectly as an end-of night tune that is as
progressive as it is moody. The track develops
introducing extra synth to compliment that jagged
kick-drum bassline. This track says more about
Mensah’s production style than any of his previous
releases; daring, innovative and effortlessly funky.
Support from Mistajam, Joker, Plastician, Noah D,
Von D and more.

DL1. ROCK CITY

Introducing Rock City with a beautifully simple lead
line, Mensah creates atmosphere with this track
from the off. Adding crunchy snares, a punchy
kick-drum and filling the space with a riff on
electric guitar, Mensah pulls off this challenging
intro with surprising success. When his bouncy
basslinedrops, expect all the diverse elements of
this track to come together into a funky number
that pulls off the ‘Bristol Sound’ in a new and
unique manner. One of the more distinct releases
on the EP, don’t be surprised if you realise that the
tune you’ve been humming all day is the lead line
to Rock City – this one sticks!

DL2. STEADY AS SHE GOES (FT. EDDIE K)

Having produced this track with label-mate and
Bristol-based producer, Eddie K, it wouldn’t be
unfair to describe ‘Steady as she goes’ as a
concrete block of deep and funky dubstep. Turn up
those subs – this one gets going with a fat kick-
drum from the get-go. Glitchy elements to the
intro maintain the progression into the drop,
comprising of a bassline that must have been
dragged up from the depths of the sea – seriously
subterranean groove! This chunky production is
later guided through with a typically well-crafted
synth-line, culminating a well-rounded track that is
going to go down well with any bass-loving crowd.

DL3. STAPLETON RD.

One of Mensah’s more eerie productions, a
menacing and expectant intro is created -
presumably a tribute to this tune’s namesake,
Stapleton Rd in the heart of Bristol. Imagine
yourself walking down a deserted, derelict road, in
the rain, late at night – this is the soundtrack to
such a situation. Crawling drums and synths guide
the sense of dread deep into your soul;
complimented by a bassline that fits perfectly with
the creepy mood of this track. Go to Stapleton Rd
and you’ll agree that this is a fitting testament to its
nature. Mensah has captured it brilliantly and that’s
why fellow Bristolian, Joker, is representing this
production to the full.
